# Agent Voice: Gender and Preferred Voice

> Set an agent's gender and the voice it speaks in, in meetings and in Talk.

## Overview

When an agent talks out loud, in a meeting or in **Talk** in the dashboard and Genesis Desktop, it speaks in one voice. Two per-agent settings decide which voice:

* **Gender** picks the kind of voice: female, male or neutral.
* **Voice** names one voice to use instead. Leave it on **Automatic (by gender)** to let the gender pick.

A change takes effect the next time that agent's voice starts. A voice that is already running keeps its voice until it ends.

## Where to set them

1. Open **Agents** and choose the agent.
2. Open its **LLM** tab.
3. Under **Gender**, choose **Female**, **Male** or **Unspecified**.
4. Under **Voice**, choose **Automatic (by gender)** or one voice from the list. The voices are grouped **Female**, **Male** and **Neutral**.
To hear a voice before choosing it, press **Preview voices**. Each voice in the list has a **Play** button that plays a short recorded sample, in the voice's own language; listening changes nothing. Press **Use this voice** beside the one you want to make it the agent's voice. The voice the agent speaks in now is marked **In use**, or **In use (Automatic)** when its gender picks it; choosing a voice with **Use this voice** replaces Automatic with that fixed voice.
**Play** beside the list plays the agent's current voice. On **Automatic (by gender)** it plays the voice the agent's gender picks for it right now. Press **Stop** to end a sample early. The samples are part of Genesis, so playing one costs nothing and works offline.

Each choice is saved as soon as you make it. Changing them needs the right to manage that agent: the `manage_agents` permission, or management rights on that agent.

You can also ask an agent that can manage agents, such as Eve, to make the change: for example "make Gennie female" or "have Adam speak in willow".

## How the voice is chosen

| Setting | Voice used |
| - | - |
| **Voice** set to a voice Genesis allows | That voice. |
| **Voice** on **Automatic (by gender)** | A voice picked by gender. |
| **Voice** set to a voice that is no longer allowed | A voice picked by gender. The LLM tab shows "not available; using a female (or male, or neutral) voice". |

When the gender picks, each agent keeps the same voice for as long as its gender stays the same.

| Gender | Voices it picks from |
| - | - |
| **Female** | quartz (Australian), willow (Irish), gleam (North American), delta (Southern U.S.) |
| **Male** | ripple (Australian), vesper (British), stone (Irish), meridian (North American), beacon (Filipino), cinder (Southern U.S.) |
| **Unspecified** (the default) | The neutral voices: cedar, coral, sage, ash, verse, ballad, shimmer, alloy and echo |

Female and male follow OpenAI's own description of each GPT-Live voice. OpenAI does not describe the neutral voices as female or male, so some of them may still sound female or male to you. If an agent should sound a particular way, choose its **Voice** directly.

The **Voice** list also includes Genesis voices in other languages (Portuguese, German, French, Hindi, Japanese and Korean), and marin. The gender never picks those on its own; choose one under **Voice** to use it.

## Eve

Eve is **Female** by default and speaks in **marin**. Both are defaults, not fixed values: choose another gender or voice for Eve the same way as for any agent, and your choice is kept. Setting Eve's **Voice** to **Automatic (by gender)** gives her a voice picked by her gender instead of marin.

If Genesis cannot read an agent's voice settings when its voice starts, it does not hold up the conversation: the agent speaks as if nothing were saved for that session (Eve in marin, any other agent in a neutral voice), and its saved gender or voice applies again the next time its voice starts with its settings readable.

No other agent is given marin by its gender, so by default no other agent sounds like Eve.
